Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY: Movie I - The Broken World

Type: TV Special, 1 episode
Year: 02.05.2006
Categories: Action, Genetic Modification, Mecha, Piloted Robots, SciFi
Plot:
The year is Cosmic Era 73. The Bloody Valentine War, fought between the PLANTS space colonies and the nations of the Atlantic Federation, has ended and an uneasy truce has settled upon the Earth sphere. With the signing of the Junius Seven Treaty, the world s soldiers have left the battlefield and the grizzly sights of war behind. Many who fought now seek peace and refuge in the shelter of civilian life. But one boy, Shin Asuka, is finding that incredibly hard. A coordinator who lost his entire family during the Battle of Orb, he now fights with ZAFT in one of their newest machines, the Impulse Gundam. Of course, ZAFT is only developing these machines for defensive applications, or so they claim, but when a group of Federation operatives steal some of these prototype machines, the world is once again plunged towards war.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY: Movie II - Respective Swords

Type: TV Special, 1 episode
Year: 27.07.2006
Categories: Action, Genetic Modification, Mecha, Piloted Robots, SciFi
Plot:
Director Mitsuo Kukada pulls out all the stops in the complex battles that make up most of The Far-Away Dawn, the second feature recut from the broadcast series Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (2002). The war between the forces of the Earth Alliance and ZAFT becomes increasingly tangled as operations shift to the Terran surface. New characters and new countries enter the conflict, introducing shifting loyalties, betrayals, and revelations. But these political struggles and the conflict between the human "Naturals" and the genetically enhanced "Coordinators" take a back seat to the duel between friends-turned-enemies Kira Yamoto and Athrun Zala. In their first spectacular face-off, they destroy the Strike and Aegis Gundams. Both pilots agonize over their actions, shedding tears like lawn sprinklers. But when they obtain new, substantially stronger mobile suits, they must decide how to use that awesome power. Cutting several half-hour episodes into a 90-minute feature means the action careens along at a breakneck pace, with little time for the characters or the audience to rest. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY: Movie IV - The Cost of Freedom

Type: TV Special, 1 episode
Year: 08.01.2007
Categories: Action, Genetic Modification, Mecha, Piloted Robots, SciFi
Plot:
I liked Gundam Seed when I first saw it but I never got into Destiny all that much for a number of reasons. Taking it in through the movies, I can see some potential for it but there's also the feeling that it wasn't able to capitalize on what it wanted to do and instead fell to some basic conventions. This final movie does have a number of really good epic moments and there's a lot of payoff theatrical-wise with the visuals and the scale of it all, but like the other movies the characters are secondary to the events and that makes it hard to connect with anything. It's a very pretty show visually and the mecha action is fun as is the way it feels so epic, but without that closer more personal connection to it, it doesn't resonate as well. It does make me wonder if the TV series manages this better, but at the same time the movies sort of take the steam out of actually wanting to find out. If all you wanted was big mecha action, this is the route to go over the TV series itself. If you want more character material, the TV series is likely to be your best bet.
